Bahrs Wins Open Wheel Onslaught

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (6/18/14) -- Jason Bahrs knew he had the car to win at the Quad City Speedway on Wednesday, but he just had to wait for the right time to use it.

Bahrs started fourth and squeezed his way into second position behind Milo Veloz Jr. by lap two. His sat there for the first handful of laps, biding his time. He and the leader, Veloz Jr., eventually caught the tail end of the field and began lapping cars.

On the ninth circuit, Veloz Jr. was trapped behind the No 00 of Rob Henry on the inside of the track, allowing Bahrs to scoot by on the outside. Bahrs led the final 21 laps in route to his first $1,000 Rock Island County Fair race.

"He has the capability to win a race even if he doesn't have the best racecar," Bahrs said, praising Veloz. "He's a challenge anytime we're at the race track."

Veloz led the opening nine laps, but was challenged by Bahrs for the first six. The two battled for the top-spot with some exciting side-by-side action.

"I was seeing where he was going to run and trying to figure out what it was going to take to get around him," said Bahrs. "I showed him the nose and seen where he moved. Once I decided what was going to work out, I was able to get around him."

It was just the second time this season that Veloz's IMCA V43 modified had seen the track. He used Sunday night's points race at QCS to work out some kinks in the setup. The three-time Fair race winner mentioned on Tuesday that a good draw was a must to compete on Wednesday.

Sure enough, the top four just exchanged positions in the race. Bahrs started fourth and finished first and Veloz, who finished second, was the polesitter. Greg Durbin started in second and came home third with Terry Renfro finishing fourth after a third-place starting spot.

"It was muddy and I was trying to hold my line, but I saw the 00 getting tighter," said Veloz, explaining how he lost the lead. "I took my chance without getting carried away. For the second night out, the car was fantastic. I have no complaints.

"We drew the No. 1, there was no better spot. I knew if there was anybody here that was going to beat me, (Bahrs) was the one. He's a tough 20-year veteran that has been running real good."

Troy Cordes came home with a strong fifth-place finish. Brandon Durbin, Nebraska's Jeff Joldersma, Chris Lawrence, Matt Werner and Rob Henry rounded out the Top-10 in the 20-car field.

Final lap: Bryan Brinker wheeled the 1M machine to the win in the Mod-Lite class. There were two cautions in the feature. Jason Masengarb started in last (ninth) and brought the 4M to a very close second-place finish. Brian Schnell won the lone heat race of the night for the Mod-Lites and came home third in the feature. Robert Bell won the Midget 15-lap feature.

Jackson Wins on Last Lap Pass

East Moline, IL. (6/15/14) – The Weber Auto Group Street Stocks and the U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lites each ran a double header on Sunday night at the Quad City Speedway.

The first for each class were makeups from the June 1st rain out. Nobody was able to sweep their respective class, but that made for some thrilling action.

Chad Coyne took home the first-place trophy leading all 15 laps in the Street Stock makeup. However, his night ended early after the driveshaft on his No. 13 stock car busted in his heat qualifier for the second feature.

Rick Schriner took his No. 8 machine to the front early in the race in the dramatic second feature, but Steven Jackson slowly reeled him in. Before the caution flag waived with two laps to go, the two were door-to-door fighting for the lead. Schriner got a good restart on the green-white-checkered and was the leader at the white flag. He remained the leader until turn four. That was when Jackson was able to get the run off the bottom and sneak past Schriner for the win in a photo finish. Jackson and Jarett Franzen scored Top-5's in both features.

"I was just hugging those tires," said Jackson, referring to the tires along the inside of the track. "I was trying to find any spot on the track that I could find. (Schriner) tried to squeeze down there and take my line (in turn four on the final lap), but I had my nose in there already."

Andy Baugh was close to getting the clean sweep in the midgets. He was leading the first feature until he and Mitchell Davis got mixed up. That allowed Austin Archdale to lead the final five laps and take the checkers in feature No. 1. Baugh recovered by scoring the win in the second race. He led all 15 laps.

Mike Murphy Jr. collected his third QC Speedway Eriksen Chevrolet-Buick IMCA Late Model feature win of 2014 on Sunday. He led the final 18 laps and claiming the lead from eventual third-place finisher Rob Toland. The key for Murphy was staying ahead of the No. 58 of Ray Guss Jr. Murf and Guss started in eighth and ninth.

"Things are going pretty good at this place," said Murphy, who took soul possession of first place in the championship standings at QCS. "It's kind of a contest to see who can get to the front first. I knew beating Ray to the front was really important. (Sunday night) the emphasis was getting there fast."

Guss ran out of laps and settled for a second-place finish. Gary Webb and Mike Zemo Jr. rounded out the Top 5 in the late models.

Drama in Riverbend Pizza Place 4-cylinders: Brandon Dahl was officially announced as the winner after Brandt Cole refused to go through post race tech inspection. Cole claimed the 'lead' on lap three in the 12 lap feature after passing nine cars on the high side. Andy Loy finished second, Zach Dahl third and Eric Stogdell in fourth.

Toppert Services IMCA Modifieds: Eric Barnes led all 20 laps in a caution-free feature. Barnes started second in the feature, and made quick work of the polesitter, Jerame Mowery. The best racing the entire race was from second through fourth as the driver's were two and three-wide at times. Todd Dykema finished second, Mowery finished third and Kevin Goben crossed the line fourth. Doug Crampton, after starting 10th, finished fifth.

Durbin Nearly Pulls off the Racing Hat Trick

East Moline, IL. (6/8/14) – It had been an up and down start to the 2014 season for Quad City Speedway regular, Brandon Durbin. He made the switch from UMP Modified to IMCA Modified during the off season and there had been a bit of a learning curve and some bad luck to start the season. Two weeks ago at the Davenport Speedway Durbin finally got it figured out and took home the checkered flag. Then Sunday night Durbin nearly pulled off a Toppert Services IMCA Modified hat trick.

In the Toppert Services IMCA Modified make-up feature Durbin held off a fierce challenge from Colona’s Matt Werner, who was all over Durbin for majority of the 20 lap feature, to win the first race of the evening. Werner would take second followed by Ray Cox Jr., Doug Crampton, who came charging through the field after an early caution sent him to the back of pack, and Brian Bushong.

Durbin would go on to win his heat race and the stage was set for the nearly impossible racing hat trick. In the second Toppert Services IMCA Modified feature of the night Durbin would race neck and neck with another Colona native, Jason Bahrs, for most of that 20 lap feature. Once again Matt Werner put himself in the mix and challenged both Durbin and Bahrs. In the end Bahrs would play the spoiler and take home an impressive win with Durbin second followed by Werner, Todd Dykema, and Greg Durbin, who started 13th. The other heat race winners were Bahrs and Kevin Goben.

The McDonald’s Mod Lites also had a doubleheader on card Sunday night. Coralville’s Dan Keltner would dominate the 12 lap make-up feature leading wire to wire. Jason Masengarb took second followed by Bryan Brinker, Gary Snyder, and Mike Pershing.

Another Colona native Jason Masengarb, in the #4M machine, would win in convincing fashion with Keltner holding off a solid run by Bryan Brinker to take second. The remaining top five were Dan Guss and John Belville. Heat race winners were Brinker and Masengarb.

In the Weber Auto Group Street Stocks, Orion’s Chad Coyne took control of the 15 lap feature immediately and never looked back leading every lap. You could throw a blanket over positions second through sixth with Jeremy Gustaf taking second followed by Perry Gellerstedt, Jarett Franzen, and Rob Nylin. The heat race winners were Coyne and Gustaf.

A very competitive 18 car field of Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders did battle in their 12 lap feature. After Brandon Dahl took over the lead, he held off stiff challenges from Andy Loy, Cameron Poci, and Eric Stogdell and parked his #D17 in victory lane. Loy would take second followed by Poci, Austen Becerra, and Stogdell. Heat race winners were Stogdell, Sean Fersch, and Poci.

In the Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models, Green Rock’s Mike Murphy Jr. once again parked the yellow 14 machine in victory lane after their 30 lap feature. “The River City Hustler” Ray Guss Jr. charged through the field from his last place starting spot to take second place followed by Brunson Behning, Todd Malmstrom, and Rob Toland. The heat race winners were Toland and Behning.

Racing continues next Sunday, June 15th, at the Quad City Speedway with make-up features in Weber Auto Group Street Stocks and U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lites plus a full program of the racing action in the Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models, Topper Services IMCA Modifieds, Weber Auto Group Street Stocks, Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders, and U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lites.

Strayer Bags Biggest Career Win

East Moline, IL. (5/25/14) – Jake Strayer made the two hour haul from Newton, Iowa, worth his while Sunday night at the Quad City Speedway. In his first ever trip to the QCS, Strayer won the $1,200 top prize in the 21st Annual Gary Reinhart Memorial sponsored by Leffler Construction, Gade Race Engines, The Truck Doctor, Fikes Truck Line of the Quad Cities, A. Fry Construction, C&W Trucking, and Chuck Hanna.

A solid field of Topper Services IMCA Modifieds battled through three heat races and two consolation races to determine the 22 car starting field. Strayer started tenth and navigated his way through traffic like he raced at QCS every Sunday night. He held off a late challenge from 2013 IMCA Modified Track Champion Greg Durbin, who started 18th. Jim Sandusky, who came of out retirement for this race, finished third followed by Leland Bushong and Jason Buss. Heat race winners were Ray Cox Jr., Strayer, and Matt Werner. Consolation winners were Justin Veloz and Chris Lawrence.

Rock Island’s Bryan Brinker fought neck and neck with Jason Masengarb in the 12 lap McDonald’s Mod Lite feature. Brinker took control of the lead on lap nine and went untouched the final three laps to take home the victory in his first night of racing in 2014. Masengarb finished second followed Mike Pershing, Dan Guss, and Jared Norton. Heat race winners were Pershing and Masengarb.

After a caution with two laps to go in the 12 lap Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinder feature, the stage was set for a great finish. Blue Grass’ Brandon Dahl and Brandt Cole ran side by side for the green, white, checkered finish with Dahl beating Cole by a nose at the line. Cole ended up being disqualified so the top five were Zach Dahl, Brandon Setser, Steve Spiker, and Dustin Forbes. Heat race winners were Cameron Poci and Forbes.

The Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models stole the show with their barnburner of a feature. The last two IMCA Late Model Track Champions started on the front row of the feature and put on clinic from start to finish. Todd Malmstrom, the 2013 champ, grab the lead from the drop of the green with Ray Guss Jr., the 2012 champ, in tow. For nearly every lap of the 30 lap race, Malmstrom and Guss ran side by side, in and out of the lapped traffic. When the checkered flag waved Malmstrom crossed the line first with Guss second followed by LeRoy Brenner, Mike Murphy Jr. (who started 14th), and Travis Denning. Heat race winners were Malmstrom and Guss.

Racing continues with points racing in all six divisions; Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models, Toppert Services IMCA Modifieds, Weber Auto Group Street Stocks, Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders, McDonalds Mod Lites, and U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lites. Packed Pits at the Quad City Speedway

East Moline, IL. (5/18/14) – A stellar field of 103 cars checked in to compete at the Quad City Speedway Sunday night. The Toppert Services IMCA Modifieds had a stout 28 cars, while the Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders had a solid 22 cars, U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lites had 16 cars, Weber Auto Group Street Stocks had 15 cars, Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models had 14 cars and 9 cars in the McDonald’s Mod Lites.

Feature racing action got underway with the 15 lap U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lite feature. Auburn, IL’s, Mitchell Davis used the first six laps to figure out the top side of the track was going to be the fastest. After starting 11th in the feature Davis was in the lead by lap seven. Davis went on to collect his second win of the season at QCS. Billy Brickley took second followed Patrick Brauns. Heat race winners were Brickley and Robert Bell.

The McDonald’s Mod Lites’ 12 lap feature was on tap next. Dan Guss held off stiff competition from Coralville’s Dan Keltner and Colona’s Jason Masengarb to pilot his 8G car to victory lane. Keltner held off Masengarb for second. Keltner also won the heat race.

Once the Weber Auto Group Street Stocks got their 15 lap feature going it turned out to be one of the best features of the night. Rock Island’s Rick Schriner took full advantage of his outside front row starting spot to take the lead. Schriner held off an early charge from Jeremy Gustaf and a late charge from Rob Nylin and Steven Jackson. Nylin and Jackson came all the way from the back of the pack to challenge for the lead. Schriner would take checkered first followed by Nylin and Jackson. Heat race winners were Chad Coyne and Jarett Franzen.

After three heat races and two consolation races, 20 cars were ready to start the Toppert Services IMCA Modified 20 lap feature. Colona’s Matt Werner grabbed the lead right away from his outside front row starting spot. Werner was challenged for the lead early on by Jason Bahrs and Justin Veloz. After a lap 10 caution, that bunched the field back, Rock Island’s Doug Crampton made his move towards the front. Coming from the 8th starting spot, Crampton moved to the high side of the track and by lap 18 he had the lead and would go on to win. Werner and Veloz battled side by side for second with Veloz taking second followed by Werner. Heat race winners were Joe Jones Jr., Werner, and Bahrs. Consolation race winners were T.J. Patz and Todd Dykema.

The Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models thundered on the track next for their 30 lap main event. A couple Quad City Speedway legends, Mike Cothron and Gary Webb battled early on for the lead but it was Green Rock’s Mike Murphy Jr. that charged from his 7th starting spot to take control of the lead by lap 6. Murphy would go untouched the final 24 laps and take home the victory. Ray Guss Jr., in a borrowed car (Nate Beuseling’s #46), ran side by side for several laps with Davenport’s Matt Ryan battling for second. Guss would finish second followed by Ryan. Heat race winners were Todd Malmstrom and Murphy.

The Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders rolled out for the last feature of the night. Davenport’s Zach Dahl led wire to wire even after a lap 8 caution bunched the field back up and gave hard charging Brandt Cole another shot at the lead. Cole would take second followed by Andy Loy. Heat race winners were Brandon Dahl, Cole, and Z. Dahl.

Racing continues next Sunday, May 25th, for a Memorial Day weekend special featuring the 21st Annual Gary Reinhart Memorial paying $1,200 to win and $175 to start the Toppert Services IMCA Modified 30 lap feature. Also racing will be the Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models, Riverbend Pizza Place 4-Cylinders, and McDonald’s Mod Lites. Grandstand admission will be $12 for adults, $6 for kids 6 to 12, and kids 5 and under are free. Hot laps are at 5:15pm with racing to follow.

Kay Goes Wire to Wire

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (5/4/14) -- When Justin Kay redrew the pole position after winning his heat race on Sunday; the other driver's knew it was going to be a tough night.

A tough night it was, but not for Kay, who never relinquished his pole position in the fourth annual Hershel Roberts Memorial Deery Brothers Summer Series 58-lap feature at the Quad City Speedway. The win -- Kay's first Deery of 2014 -- snaps Ray Guss Jr.'s three race winning-streak in the event.

From the drop of the green, the Wheatland, Ia. No. 15K IMCA Late Model was a rocket. Though he had to give a little in the middle of both corners, it just made for a better exit as he built on his lead.

"I got through three and four really good at first," said Kay, the 2013 IMCA Late Model National champion. "That went away and one and two came around for me. We at least had one good corner. After a while, I finally figured out how to hit a rut just right and make it turn better."

Three-time Deery champion Jeff Aikey was Kay's biggest threat in the entire race. He restarted in second after the race's fifth and final caution with 10 to go. Aikey flirted with the lead on lap 49, but couldn't complete the pass at the line. He had to settle for second-place finish.

'I had to stop and pretty much kill the motor in the middle to make sure I got the traction," said Kay. "Then I launched up and out of there."

Aikey jumped out his car after the finish with a grin as he spoke with crew members about the great run.

"I couldn't get through one and two very well," said Aikey, who started in 12th. "It was such a fine line up there and I kept hitting the wall. It slowed me down. Three and four was where I made up all of my ground. If I could have gotten through one and two, I might have had (Kay). It was a great car."

Joel Callahan started 17th and made his way to a third-place finish. He rallied after not finishing his heat race and being the fourth and final qualifier in the first of two B-main's.

"We were good even in our heat race, but the track had so much traction we spun the spool out of the rear end," Callahan said. "We thought we were done for the night, but we were fortunate enough to put longer axles in the rear to get a few more inches of bite in there."

Mike Murphy Jr. was consistent, running in the Top-5 all night. He was as high as second with 28 to go, but went up to the high groove and dropped a few positions. The No. 14 car had to settle for a fourth-place finish. Davenport's Brian Harris finished in fifth with QC Speedway regulars Mike Zemo Jr, sixth and Todd Malmstrom seventh.

Final lap: Greg Durbin won an exciting Toppert Jetting Services IMCA modified 20-lapper. He was able to hold off Jason Bahrs on the restart with three to go. Bahrs spun out coming to the checkered flag allowing Doug Crampton to finish second. Rob Nylin won the 15-lap Weber Auto Group Street Stock feature with Steve Jackson in second, Jeremy Gustaf in third and Jarett Franzen in fourth-place. Andy Baugh won the Midget Lite feature.

Crampton Cruises to Victory

EAST MOLINE, IL (4/20/14) -- Doug Crampton just had that feel from the moment he unloaded the car on Sunday.

Fast in his heat, and fast in the feature was the No. 40 IMCA Modified. Crampton led all 20 laps of the Toppert Services IMCA Modified show.

"It helps when you start out front," said Crampton, who started on the outside-pole next to Brandon Durbin. Durbin spun after he and Crampton made contact in turn two on lap one. That caused a race-restart. "I had a couple good battles there after the cautions."

Eric Barnes was one of those challenges as he finished second. The first 12 laps, it was Crampton with a massive lead. A few cautions in the middle part of the feature allowed Barnes to catch and nearly complete the pass on Crampton.

Matt Werner had to maneuver through the wrecks as he started towards the back. He made it up to third-place before the car just went away. He settled for a fifth-place finish.

"It's just wasn't working," said Werner of the final five laps when he slipped three positions. "Luckily, I was able to miss the wrecks and gain a couple spots anyways."

Eriksen Chevrolet Buick IMCA Late Models: If this one was a 20-lap feature, Mike Zemo Jr. would have won in dominating fashion. But it was a 30-lapper, and it was Ray Guss Jr. seeing the checkered flag first.

Zemo, and the Z car, had one slip up in the entire race, and it came after crossing the starting stripe for the 20th time.

"I was being told that I had a big lead, but I felt like I was slowing down," said Zemo. "I wanted to pass the lapped (traffic), and I went in and I went too hard. I hit the brakes and spun out. It was one of those where you're just not going to save it."

At that point, Zemo was frustrated with himself. He was forced to restart at the back of the eight-car field with 10 to go. Z rallied for a second-place finish, challenging Guss in the final three laps.

Guss and the No. 39 of Rob Toland battled back and forth for five laps for the top spot after the Zemo spin. Guss managed to beat Toland to the line in each of those laps and led the final 5 laps for the win.

"I don't know what Zemo had going on, but he was gone," said Guss. "I was patient. If I would have over-drove it, I would have been doing the slide too. The car had plenty of traction off the bottom, and I had to keep it down there."

Mike Murphy Jr., Toland, and Milo Veloz Jr. rounded out the Top-5.

Final lap: Mitchell Davis won the U-Pull-A-Part/Cimco IMRA Midget Lite 20-lap feature, claiming his first lead off turn two with 2 to go. Jeff Zelinski led a race-high nine laps. Rick Schriner was able to hold off a late-charging Steve Jackson for the Weber Auto Group Street Stock feature win. Jackson finished second with Jarret Franzen, Chad Coyne and Rob Nylin all in the Top-5. It was the Dahl show in the 4-cylinder feature as the D23 of Zach Dahl defeated his brother Brandon Dahl.
